How to react when your hookup says they’re on PrEP

How to react when your hookup says they’re on PrEP

Like many other people in the last couple of years, I started taking PrEP — the daily pill that lowers one’s risk of getting HIV. Since it’s a new drug, I’ve been keeping up with the news and controversy surrounding it, and there’s been a lot. Perhaps most troubling to me, though, is the rise of PrEP haters. So, I thought I’d give everyone a handy guide on how to react when your hookup tells you they’re on PrEP.

Love won't protect you from HIV, verify their status

In relationships, as in life, trust is incredibly important. No matter the topic, you should be able to trust that what your partner says is gold.

Even still, when it comes to HIV status, it’s better to trust but verify.

Researchers Find Clue To How Some Control HIV Without Medication - Quickie

Researchers in the UK believe that they have identified what may be the reason some can control their HIV without medication. About 1 in 300 people infected with HIV are said to be "controllers". Until now, no one knew exactly how it worked.

Through some form of genetic sequencing, researchers have identified about 300 points that seem to be associated with immune response. Of those 300 points, five specific amino acids in the HLA-B protein were identified as having a key role.

The HLA-B protein plays a significant part in seeking out and marking alien or infected cells for destruction by T-Cells. The marking is done by injecting a homing beacon like peptides into the infected cells. All five of these amino acids are effective in the injection process.

It's Never Just HIV - Video

This video is so fucking doom and gloom... but true. I REALLY wish they would dispel with all the "YOUR GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!" messages in these videos. Please know that the way these people are trying to get you to wrap it up is ridiculous. Even though I would have like more facts and less scare tactics what they are saying is true. Having HIV puts you at higher risk for all sorts of diseases. Also know that you don't die from AIDS. You die from some other disease that your compromised immune system can not fight off. Be aware, know your risks, choose to wrap it up. If you don't wrap it up, keep knowledgable about your status, inform your partners, and try to minimize the risks.

Keep it sexy.

Medication To Treat HIV DOES Prevent Transmission - Quickie

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine  a combination of two common antiretroviral drugs if taken daily will reduce the risk of transmission in men who have sex with men. Nearly 2500 mean were either given a combination of emtritabin and tenofovir, know as PrEP, or a placebo. The risk was reduced by 44% in those recieving PrEP, and 73% in those who had taken it for a year.

"We now have strong evidence that pre-exposure prophylaxis with an antiretroviral drug, a strategy widely referred to as PrEP, can reduce the risk of HIV acquisition among men who have sex with men, a segment of the population disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS," says Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Quickie: Testing "Strongly Suggest That Cure of HIV Infection Has Been Achieved."

Mind blowing news out today from the Huffington Post. It appears that "The Berlin Patient" aka Timothy Ray Brown has been cured of HIV. Brown underwent a stem cell transplant in 2007 as a part of his chemotherapy to cure his Lukemia and as a result his doctors are claiming that he may be the first human ever know to be cured of the disease.

Amazing news. Keep in mind that this is only one case study and that we do not know if this is repeatable. However, we do now know that one man has been cured and that should be enough to give hope to the other 33million people on this earth who are infected with the virus.

It seems that by this time in 2020 we may very well have a cure... wonderful times we live in.
